Reddish-Pink RHODOCHROSITE with minor Tetrahedrite and Chalcopyrite from The Sweet Home Mine in Colorado. This specimen is from the new Detroit City Portal of the famous Sweet Home Mine. This piece is from the Rhodochrosite-bearing vein in the new tunnel. The original tunnel of the Sweet Home Mine was closed in 2004. In 2018, the owners began operations to open a new tunnel some 200 vertical feet higher up the mountain and called it the Detroit City Portal of the Sweet Home Mine. They began to find rhodochrosite during the 2019 mining season. This specimen is from the 2019 discoveries.

RHODOCHROSITE is a manganese carbonate mineral. In 2002, Colorado Governor Bill Owens signed a bill passed by the General Assembly designating Rhodochrosite as the new state mineral after the Platte Canyon High School in Bailey, Colorado made the proposal based on the fact that the Sweet Home Mine near Alma, Colorado produces the highly prized and rare red crystals which are found only in a few places on earth. Rhodochrosite develops in the Trigonal crystal system. Hardness is 3.5 – 4 on the Mohs scale.
