This is a classic Rhodochrosite matrix plate from a premier Asian localities. This specimen is from Oppu Mine, Nishimeya-mura, Naka-Tsugaru-gun, Aomori Prefecture, Japan, and it is 10 x 8 x 3.5 cm. The Oppu Mine has been closed for decades, with most of the mining having been done 17th -19th century. This specimen consists of a Pyrite matrix on which the Rhodochrosite grew on top forming stalagmites type of shape, very unusual for the location. The Rhodochrosite has good luster and the pink-reddish color is deeper than is showing in the photos. It is in great shape, 98% damage-free, and clean edges.
