Specimen of brilliant GOLD crystals on Sericite matrix. The specimen weighs 54 grams (1.9 ounces). Length is 1.8 inches. El Dorado County, California is famous for its gold production since the California Gold Rush in 1849.

GOLD is a native element and precious metal. It occurs in three main types of deposits: in hydrothermal quartz veins in igneous and metamorphic rocks; in volcanic-exhalative sulfide deposits; and, in placer deposits. Gold belongs to the Isometric crystal system. Hardness is 2.5 – 3 on the Mohs scale.

Location: Alhambra Gold Mine, 140’ Level, Spanish Flat District, East Belt, El Dorado County,
California, USA

The Alhambra Mine is a former lode gold occurrence/mine located 1.1 miles east of Spanish Flat (on the S side of Round Hill; 6 miles SSE of Georgetown), on private land. Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in rocks of the Mariposa Formation (schist, amphibolite, slate). The vein is in a fault zone and consists of strings of pod-like bodies of quartz in chlorite-sericite schist. At least 50% of the output of the mine was from high-grade ore. Most of the California gold has come from lode mines on the Mother Lode and on the East and West Belts in El Dorado and Mariposa Counties.
