Amazonite / Smoky Quartz
The Doris family have mined some of the most famous Amazonite and Smoky Quartz combinations that are in mineral collections and museums around the world.
Pinnacle 5 Minerals is a family run business and is celebrating its 30th year. Joe Dorris is the founder of the company and started it with his wife, Susan, in 1986 after their third child was born. The Dorris family specializes in finding some of the finest amazonite and smoky quartz combination specimens in the world.
Joe Dorris’ mineral collecting career began when he was six years old and found his first piece of mica pegmatite in the school yard. Joe taught himself to pan for gold when he was ten and went on extended prospecting trips in the Idaho mountains as a youth. Since then, he has discovered several noteworthy gem and mineral deposits in Idaho and Colorado. He made his first trip up Mount Antero in 1973 and found his first aquamarine crystals while still a cadet at the Air Force Academy. Since 1991, Joe has located claims on several potential areas, including Mount Antero, the Tarryall Mountains, and the Crystal Peak District.
He continues exploring for minerals with his children Scott, Tim, and Krystle. Tim and Krystle help run the business along with wife, Susan. Scott is currently serving in the military and will rejoin the business when he retires. Tim specializes in mining, running the machinery, and mineral preparation. He is considered one of the finest mineral preppers in the world. Krystle also helps dig and focuses on the mineral shows, sales, and jewelry. She is always available to help you find the perfect specimen for your collection. In addition, Krystle and Susan run the jewelry side of the business. Most jewelry is set or made by Krystle with Colorado mined material.
In addition to self-collected Colorado material, the Dorris family offers many fine mineral specimens from various worldwide localities for sale. Some of the Dorris family greatest finds include the Legend, which resides at the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum and the Smoky Hawk King, the largest amazonite and smoky quartz plate, which will soon display at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
Currently the Dorris family is on the television series, “Prospectors”, which airs on the Weather Channel and National Geographic International.
